Romanze opens with a lyrical, almost haunting melody, before transitioning into a highly chromatic middle section, which must have highlighted Clara Schumann’s left hand dexterity to wonderful effect.

Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) was an extraordinarily gifted pianist, achieving international fame at a very young age. She gave concerts across Europe, and included her own compositions and improvisations on her programs. She composed a catalogue of brilliant works, though she wrote virtually nothing after her husband Robert Schumann’s early death. Throughout her life, she was universally extolled for her unparalleled playing, with one critic writing that “her performances have the stamp of a divine summons.”
